Girl Child Poem: She Is

Girl Child Poem

She is a woman
Trapped in a phrase
Determined by her body size
She is a girl
Called a child
A value in her prime
She is brown
She is white
She is all shades of human skin
Somewhere, she is treated like royalty
Somewhere, an object of rape and maltreatment
Threatened to keep her lips sealed
While going through hell and high water
Yet, like a phoenix, she will rise
Even in the stench of odds and deafening doubts
Inspired by her strength
Supported by good hearts
Like Maya Angelou,
She will spring a voice out of her silence
Like Helen Keller,
She will turn her scars into masterpieces
She is a woman
Trapped in a phrase
Determined by her body size
She is a girl
Called a child
