Writer’s block is not my friend! Neither is it yours! Thanks to the outstretched hands of generative AI like ChatGPT, Google Bard, Writecream, Grammarly, Microsoft Bing, Writesonic and others, we can hastily pull ourselves back up, reignite our creativity, and continue writing content while clowning at what we overcame; writer’s block.
Creating content with generative AI is one of the easiest and fastest steps in writing since its emergence; all you need to do is just to enter a prompt and voila! Your content is generated for you in a split of seconds. However, there are moments when the content generated for you is unsatisfactory and you wish the AI could take a walk into your mind to generate the perfect content your mind pictures. Apologies! AI works on the principle of “garbage in, garbage out.” It is often what you tell the AI to do i.e. prompt, that it does, and gives you the result whether as written content, video, or graphics. Hence the a need to master how to write an effective AI prompt that gives the desired result.
In this article, I will be sharing 4 easy and effective tips for writing prompts that give you your desired result regardless of your niche or industry. I will be focusing on ChatGPT prompts in this blog post.

Case Study
You are a practising dietician with years of expertise. You offer dietary counselling services with a proven track record of incredible results. You want to use ChatGPT to write a short Facebook post about the benefits of fruits and get your audience to sign up for your one-on-one counselling.
Here is the prompt you typed before revamping it, along with the tips I will be sharing below.
Here is the content ChatGPT generated for you.
1. Personalise or Add an “Act” Rule to Your Prompt
Referencing the above case study, instead of just asking ChatGPT to write a Facebook post about the benefits of fruits as written in the prompt above, it is important to structure your prompt in a way that improves the quality and precision of the output.
Start your prompt by giving ChatGPT a personality. In this case, you will tell ChatGPT directly to assume the personality of a dietician or act as a dietician with years of experience. This helps ChatGPT to be mindful of its established personality or expertise while generating the content, making the content more personalised and credible. Note that personalising your prompt also means using the second-person pronoun “you.” Now observe a more personalised prompt below.
Prompt: “Act as an expert dietician. You have years of expertise in providing dietary counselling services to people, especially on consuming specific fruits. Most of your clients have shared incredible testimonials about how taking your counsel to consume specific fruits improved their health condition.”

2. Add the Task You Want ChatGPT to Perform
Add a statement, or a paragraph to your prompt, specifying what you need ChatGPT to address or the precise task you want it to perform. This allows it to understand what you desire to achieve with the prompt and then gives you the result. Here is the task for the case study above. It makes up the 2nd paragraph of the prompt.
Prompt: “Your task is to write a 100 to 150-word Facebook post about the benefits of eating fruits and how you can help your audience recommend the specific fruits for optimum health benefits. Create a short and engaging heading.”
3. Add Context to Your Prompt
In this section, You should provide more context to ChatGPT to help it gain clarity on the task. Here, you can share what you want to achieve with the content, the writing style, details about your brand\’s objectives, bullet points or subheadings you want it to write on, etc. Have a look at the context section of the dietician’s case study below.
Prompt: “Your writing style reflects clarity, objectivity, friendliness, professionalism, and persuasiveness. The goal of your post is to get your audience to sign up for your one-to-one diet counselling sessions.”
4. Add Limitations to Your Prompt
It is important to set clear conditions to guide ChatGPT in the result it is giving you. Setting conditions limits the volume of unnecessary content in the result. Limitations such as word count, tone, and type of audience, are a few among the numerous limitations you can set in your prompt depending on your niche/industry. Examine the limitation section of the case study below.
Prompt: “The tone should be simple and easily understood by an average Nigerian youth. Use only 3 relevant hashtags and add an engaging CTA.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the easy tips to write a perfect ChatGPT prompt and optimise it?
- A few strategic steps can help you create a perfect ChatGPT prompt that will ensure clarity, relevance, and engagement:
- First, be clear and specific about what you want; unspecific prompts can result in equally unspecific responses; therefore, providing relevant details and context helps ChatGPT better understand your needs. For example, instead of asking, “Tell me about the weather,” specify, “What is the weather like today in New York City?”
- Second, think about the format you want the response in; if you need a list, summary, or in-depth explanation, make that clear in your prompt.
- Third, tone is important; if you want a formal, casual, humorous, or technical response, state that explicitly in your prompt. Lastly, improving your prompts based on previous outputs can refine them further.
How can I tell ChatGPT to write like a human?
You must provide ChatGPT with instructions that reflect a natural, conversational tone if you want the content to be written in a way that sounds human. Begin by requesting a particular writing style. You could say something like, “Write this in a friendly, conversational tone,” or “Can you write this like a casual blog post?” Giving examples works well too. Give them a piece of human-written text to imitate and instruct them to “Write in a style similar to this example.” Additionally, be specific about the usage of slang, and specific phrases. To make the text feel more relatable and real, you can also ask Chat GPT to include personal notes or anecdotes.
